United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has formally welcomed Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following the retirement of Tony Elumelu from the position.
Newsonspot reports that Nnorom officially assumed office on August 21, 2026, succeeding Elumelu, who retired after completing the maximum tenure permitted for non-executive directors under Central Bank of Nigeria corporate governance guidelines.
UBA announced Nnorom’s arrival in a post on its social media platforms on Wednesday, describing him as a seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with more than four decades of professional experience.
“We welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc,” the bank stated.
UBA highlighted Nnorom’s extensive experience within the financial institution, noting that he has spent more than eight years in senior leadership positions across the UBA Group.
Before becoming Group Chairman, Nnorom served as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer, among other executive roles.
He also served as a Non-Executive Director on the UBA board after joining the board in 2024.
“With his wealth of experience and understanding of UBA’s journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Group’s continued growth across Africa and beyond,” UBA said.
Nnorom’s career with the group has spanned several senior positions, including Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

As CEO of UBA Africa, he was responsible for overseeing the bank’s operations across several African markets and played a role in its continued pan-African expansion.
Beyond UBA, Nnorom has held leadership positions in major Nigerian companies and financial institutions.
He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc between September 2014 and May 2017 and has been Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.
His banking career also includes senior management roles at Standard Trust Bank, now UBA, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.
Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
He also attended Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.
UBA had earlier announced Nnorom’s appointment as Elumelu’s successor, with the transition taking effect on August 21.
The bank said his appointment comes at an important stage in the Group’s continued growth and expansion across Africa and beyond.
