The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) chapter, has suspended its two-week warning strike with immediate effect.
Newsonspot gathered that the suspension followed the signing of a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 20, 2026, between the Enugu State Government, ESUT Management and ASUU-ESUT.
The Acting Chairman of ASUU-ESUT, Dr Andrew Apeh, disclosed this on Monday, saying the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) had reviewed the terms of the agreement and approved the suspension of the industrial action.
Apeh said the decision was taken in consideration of the commitments made by the state government and its appeal for the suspension of the strike.
He, however, stressed that the suspension was dependent on the faithful implementation of all provisions contained in the MoU.
According to him, ASUU-ESUT will establish a monitoring mechanism to ensure that the agreed timelines and commitments are fully implemented.
One of the major provisions of the agreement is the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement at ESUT, with a phased rollout scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026, and conclude on January 23, 2027.
The agreement also provides for an increase in the university’s monthly subvention by N115 million, bringing the total monthly allocation to N276 million to support salaries and staff welfare obligations.
A Joint Implementation Committee, to be chaired by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, will also be established to oversee the implementation of the agreement.
The MoU further provides for the review and liquidation of EAA arrears and other outstanding staff entitlements, alongside measures to promote financial accountability within the institution.
“KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MoU”
.1. Implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in ESUT with phased rollout commencing 1st September, 2026 and concluding 23rd January, 2027.
.2. Increased Monthly Subvention to ESUT by #115,000,000.00, raising the total to #276,000,000.00 to support salary and welfare obligations.
.3. Establishment of a Joint Implementation Committee chaired by the Secretary to the State Government to oversee and perfect all components of the agreement.
.4. Review and Liquidation of EAA Arrears and other outstanding staff entitlements, with a commitment to institutional financial accountability.
.5. Immediate Remittance of Third-Party Deductions totaling over N31m to ASUU-ESUT and NUPEMCO accounts.
Apeh also disclosed that third-party deductions amounting to more than N31 million owed to ASUU-ESUT and NUPEMCO accounts would be remitted immediately.
He commended the Enugu State Government for its intervention, describing the decision to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement as an important step towards resolving long-standing welfare challenges at ESUT.
The union also welcomed the directive to ESUT Management against victimising union members or leaders over their participation in union activities.
Apeh described the development as significant for the South-East, saying Enugu State had taken a leading position in committing to the implementation of the 2025 agreement.
He said the union would continue to monitor the process, adding that all parties must ensure full compliance with the MoU.
ASUU-ESUT will reconvene at the appropriate time to assess the progress of implementation, while members have been directed to return to their duty posts and students encouraged to resume academic activities.
