The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has warned that organisations employing Corps members without providing adequate welfare, particularly accommodation and transportation, risk being blacklisted from participating in the NYSC scheme.

Newsonspot reports that while speaking during an official working visit to Kogi State in Lokoja, Nafiu stressed the importance of ensuring the well-being of Corps members and urged employers to meet their responsibilities under the programme.

He reassured Corps members that the Federal Government remains committed to improving their welfare and guaranteeing their security throughout the service year. He also called on state governments, local government councils and other stakeholders to continue supporting the NYSC scheme.

The NYSC Director-General reminded Corps members that security is a shared responsibility, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to relevant security agencies.

Nafiu also encouraged them to maintain discipline, remain dedicated to their duties and avoid actions that could damage their reputation, noting that they represent their families, educational institutions and the NYSC at all times.

He advised Corps members to take full advantage of the post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme by mastering vocational skills that can provide sustainable income after service.

According to him, Corps members should identify business opportunities within their host communities and begin earning additional income even before completing their service year.

The NYSC boss further urged them to cultivate a savings culture despite the current economic challenges, describing prudent financial management as essential for long-term success.

He encouraged them to view the service year as an opportunity to develop sound financial habits that would benefit them in the future.

Earlier, the NYSC Kogi State Coordinator, Mrs. Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, commended the Director-General for visiting the state, describing the visit as a clear demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of Corps members and NYSC staff.

She also revealed that the Kogi State Secretariat is preparing to organise a Corps Employers’ Workshop and a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme in the coming weeks.
