Federal Government has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System designed to assign a unique digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.
Newsonspot gathered that the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani announced the rollout on Thursday, describing it as a major step towards creating a more precise national addressing system and improving access to public and commercial services.
The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, assigns an 11-character digital postcode linked to geographic information and intended to identify locations more accurately than the country’s traditional six-digit postcode framework.
According to the government, the code is structured around five geographic levels – state, local government area, district, area and individual building, providing a standard reference that can be used across public and private services.
Tijani said the new system could improve deliveries, emergency response, e-commerce, public services and business operations by making homes, shops and communities easier to locate.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” the minister said.
He said reliable location information could help small businesses deliver outside their immediate areas, enable families to give emergency responders more precise directions and make it easier for government agencies to reach communities with essential services.
The minister also linked the addressing system to the Federal Government’s broader digital infrastructure plans and its ambition to build a $1 trillion economy.
Nigerians have been asked to obtain their individual postcodes through the official digital postcode platform and begin using them when giving addresses to businesses, relatives and service providers.
The rollout follows approval by Federal Executive Council in March 2026 for a GIS-enabled alphanumeric postcode system and subsequent work by NIPOST and the National Addressing Council to develop a coordinated national framework.
What to Know:
Nigeria has relied for decades on a six-digit postcode system that largely identifies broad postal zones rather than individual buildings, while many communities still depend on landmarks, street descriptions and informal directions to locate homes and businesses. That has created persistent difficulties for courier companies, emergency services, government programmes, banks and online retailers trying to verify or reach addresses.
Previous national addressing initiatives sought to improve this problem but lacked a single building-level digital reference used across institutions. The new system represents a shift toward location-specific digital addressing, with each addressable building receiving a distinct code that can potentially be integrated into logistics, e-commerce, emergency response and public-service databases. Its effectiveness will ultimately depend on how widely businesses, government agencies and ordinary Nigerians adopt and recognise the new codes.
