The ancient town of Ilawe-Ekiti has been thrown into mourning following the passing of the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I, after 14 years on the throne.
Newsonspot reports that the monarch’s death was officially announced in a statement released by the spokesperson of the Alawe-in-Council, High Chief Gbenga Agbona. According to the council, the people of Ilawe-Ekiti received the news with deep sadness and total submission to the will of God.
During his reign, Oba Alabi was widely respected for his commitment to preserving culture, promoting unity and advancing the development of the community. The late traditional ruler was also recognised for encouraging peace, education, youth empowerment and the preservation of traditional values within and beyond Ilawe-Ekiti.
The council described the monarch as a humble and dignified royal father who successfully balanced tradition with modern leadership.
“As a Royal Father, Oba Alabi walked with humility and dignity, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. His leadership strengthened the unity of Ilawe and left an indelible mark on the community he served passionately,” the statement read.
Following his passing, traditional directives have been issued across the community. The council announced the temporary closure of Obas Market and shops located along major roads in parts of the town pending the completion of final burial rites.
Drumming, loud celebrations and other social activities have also been suspended as a mark of respect for the departed monarch.
Residents were urged to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while security agencies were instructed to ensure compliance with the directives and maintain order throughout the mourning period.
