Elder statesman, businessman and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Dr. Bamanga Muhammadu Tukur, CON, is dead.
Newsonspot reports that Tukur who was governor of the defunct Gongola State, reportedly died in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, 2026, aged 91, just three days before his 91st birthday.
His death marks the passing of one of Nigeria’s prominent public figures whose career spanned more than six decades and cut across public administration, politics, business and continental economic leadership.
Born on September 15, 1935, in present-day Adamawa State, Tukur built a distinguished career in public service before becoming a major figure in Nigeria’s political and business circles.
He obtained a Master of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States and was later honoured with a Doctorate Degree in Law, Honoris Causa, by Benue State University, Makurdi.
He was also a holder of the distinguished traditional titles of Tafidan Adamawa and Wakilin Ganye in Adamawa State.
Tukur first gained national prominence through his leadership of the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he served as General Manager and Chief Executive between 1975 and 1982. During his tenure, he was involved in efforts to address congestion and improve operations at the nation’s seaports.
He subsequently ventured into partisan politics and was elected Governor of the old Gongola State during the Second Republic. His tenure was, however, cut short by the military coup of December 1983.
Tukur later returned to national public service as Minister of Industries under the military administration of General Sani Abacha, serving between 1993 and 1995.
Beyond government, he established BHI Holdings, also known as the Daddo Group, and became an influential figure in African business and economic development.
He was a founder, former president and Life Patron of the Africa Business Roundtable and was elected Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group in 2002.
His influence also extended into the international maritime sector, where he became the first African Vice President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours.
In Nigerian politics, Tukur attained one of the highest positions within the PDP when he was elected National Chairman of the party in March 2012. He remained in the position until January 2014.
Over the decades, he remained a prominent voice in Nigeria’s political, economic and business circles, earning recognition as an elder statesman with extensive experience in governance and institution-building.
Tukur’s death is expected to elicit tributes from political leaders, business associates, traditional institutions and other Nigerians who encountered him during his long public career.
He leaves behind a legacy spanning public administration, politics, business and African economic diplomacy.
