The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a total and indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement by the Ondo State Government.
Newsonspot reports that the union is also demanding payment of accrued arrears owed its members from January 1, 2026.
The decision was reached during an ASUU-UNIMED congress meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the state government.
In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Comrade Abraham O. Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, ASUU said its review of the situation showed that the 2025 agreement had not been fully implemented.
Consequently, the union directed its members to immediately withdraw from all statutory academic duties and services.
The industrial action took effect from 11:25 am on Thursday and is expected to continue indefinitely until the union’s demands are met.
As part of the strike, lecturers have been directed to stop taking lectures and classes, conducting continuous assessments and examinations, and participating in seminars at undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate levels.
The directive also covers departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, including statutory and emergency meetings conducted either physically or virtually.
ASUU-UNIMED further ordered members to suspend supervision of students’ research projects, Information Technology (IT) programmes, fieldwork and other academic responsibilities.
The union maintained that the strike would remain in force until the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement is fully implemented at UNIMED and all outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026, are paid.
The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university until an agreement is reached between the union, the institution’s management and the Ondo State Government.
