Enugu Air has joined the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) as its 50th member, marking a significant milestone for the relatively new Nigerian carrier and strengthening Nigeria’s presence in Africa’s aviation industry.
Newsonspot reports that AFRAA announced the admission in Nairobi on Wednesday, saying the development further expands its membership in Nigeria’s growing domestic aviation market.
AFRAA Secretary General, Abdérahmane Berthé, welcomed Enugu Air into the association, describing the airline as an example of the homegrown investment needed to build stronger and more resilient air connectivity across Africa.
He said AFRAA would support Enugu Air as it works towards International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification and expands its operations.
Enugu Air CEO, Capt. Tolu Ita, described the membership as a major milestone in the airline’s short history. He said the development reinforces the carrier’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable air travel while contributing to the vision of a unified African aviation market.
Founded on July 7, 2025, Enugu Air began commercial operations with Embraer E170, E190 and E195 aircraft. Headquartered in Enugu, the airline operates from Akanu Ibiam International Airport and currently serves nine domestic destinations, including Enugu, Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt.
The airline plans to expand its network across Nigeria before eventually launching regional and international routes connecting destinations in Africa, Europe and beyond.
AFRAA said Enugu Air’s admission aligns with its strategic priorities and further strengthens the association’s voice in Nigeria, which remains a key market in efforts to develop an integrated African aviation industry.
Founded in Accra, Ghana, in April 1968 and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, AFRAA promotes the interests of African airlines and advocates for the development of the continent’s aviation industry.
Its members account for more than 85 per cent of international traffic carried by African airlines.
