The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, as the new Speaker of the Eighth Assembly.
Newsonspot reports that Idiaye emerged on Monday following the resignation of the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, amid reported tension within the House and moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.
The resignation was announced during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, who presided over the sitting after the House received Agbebaku’s resignation letter.
Following the announcement, Sunday Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the position. His nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, representing Owan East Constituency.
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who then assumed duties as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers also approved changes to the leadership of the majority caucus following a letter from the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojiezele was appointed Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, emerged as Deputy Majority Leader.
The House also approved a letter from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which nominated Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader.
The latest changes have reshaped the leadership structure of the Edo State House of Assembly, with Idiaye now at the helm of the Eighth Assembly.
