The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded the name of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to its candidate nomination portal, marking a significant milestone in the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Newsonspot reports that the development was disclosed on Monday by the National Leader of the NDC, who also confirmed that the party has filed an appeal against a recent court judgment alongside an application for a stay of execution.
According to the party, both legal processes have been served on the INEC Chairman and the electoral commission. It added that INEC has granted the NDC access to its nomination portal, enabling the party to upload the names of its candidates in line with the commission’s electoral timetable.
The National Leader revealed that his own details, along with those of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have already been uploaded to the portal. He explained that the vice-presidential candidate’s details would be submitted after the completion of the required documentation.
“My name and that of the presidential candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the vice-presidential candidate will be done tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” the statement read.
The NDC maintained that it remains a duly registered political party and has complied with all electoral requirements, including conducting its primary elections under the observation and monitoring of INEC.
The party stated that the selection of candidates for various elective positions has been concluded, with the remaining task being the administrative submission of candidates’ names to the electoral commission.
In line with the electoral timetable, the NDC said it has until July 11 to upload the names of its National Assembly candidates and until July 17 to submit those of its governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.
The party appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm, assuring them that there is sufficient time to complete the nomination process and all necessary electoral procedures.
While acknowledging that disagreements arose during its primary elections, the NDC said reconciliation efforts are ongoing to unite aspirants and stakeholders across the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party also assured unsuccessful aspirants that they would be fully integrated into campaign structures, committees and other party activities, describing them as an important part of its grassroots political strength.
Congratulating its candidates, members and supporters, the NDC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. It also commended INEC for what it described as professionalism in handling the party’s registration and nomination processes.
The party further called on the electoral commission, the judiciary and security agencies to remain impartial in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions, expressing confidence that the pending appeal and related applications would be determined in accordance with the law.
