Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained why he attended the launch of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential campaign office in Abuja.
Newsonspot reports that Obi, in a statement shared on his verified X handle on Tuesday, said his decision to attend the event was driven by his desire to promote a political culture built on unity, love, justice, mutual respect and inclusion.
According to the former Anambra State governor, these values are particularly important as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, which could intensify political disagreements and deepen divisions across the country.
Obi stressed that political differences should not supersede the collective interest of building a better Nigeria.
He also urged politicians, especially those seeking the presidency, to place their commitment to the nation above political affiliations and personal ambitions.
The NDC presidential candidate called on presidential contenders to focus their campaigns on practical ideas and workable solutions to some of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity, poverty, hunger, inequality and the growing number of out-of-school children.
He further advocated issue-based and respectful political competition, warning against personal attacks and unnecessary divisions among political actors.
“Let us compete on ideas that will unite our people, improve their lives, and restore hope to our nation, while maintaining respect, decency, and love for one another,” Obi said.
He also congratulated Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, as well as other leaders and members of the APM on the launch of the campaign office.
Obi’s appearance at the APM event comes amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and political groups stepping up consultations and preparations across the country.
His remarks further emphasised the importance of preserving national unity and maintaining relationships among political actors despite differences in political platforms as the race towards the 2027 presidency gathers momentum.
