Victor Osimhen has opened up on the Super Eagles’ painful defeat to Morocco following Nigeria’s exit from the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Newsonspot reports that the highly competitive encounter ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes of intense football, before Morocco triumphed 4–2 on penalties to book their place in the final. The result brought an end to Nigeria’s hopes of lifting the AFCON trophy and sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts across the continent.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen admitted that the loss was difficult to accept but praised the fighting spirit and commitment displayed by the Nigerian players. According to the Napoli striker, both teams were tactically disciplined, leaving very few clear scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Osimhen noted that the Super Eagles executed their game plan well and acknowledged Morocco’s strong defensive organisation. He described the encounter as one decided by the smallest details, stressing that football at such a high level can often be unpredictable.

Despite Nigeria enjoying periods of dominance, the breakthrough goal never came, forcing the match into penalties. Osimhen explained that penalty shootouts often come down to luck and do not always reflect the overall performance of a team.

Nigeria missed two crucial spot kicks, while Morocco converted all theirs to seal victory. Osimhen, who was substituted before the shootout, admitted it was painful to watch the decisive moments from the sidelines.

The striker also reacted to some controversial officiating decisions during the match, suggesting that the pressure of refereeing a host nation may have influenced certain calls. However, he refused to place full blame on the referee, insisting that the team must take collective responsibility for the outcome.

Despite the disappointment, Osimhen highlighted Nigeria’s achievement of reaching another AFCON semi-final, saying it reinforces the country’s strong reputation in African football. He praised the unity within the squad and expressed confidence that the team is building something special.

Osimhen urged Nigerian fans to remain proud and supportive, promising that the Super Eagles will return stronger. He added that lessons from the defeat to Morocco will play a key role in shaping future success as Nigeria now shifts focus to upcoming qualifiers.

Though the pain of the loss remains fresh, Osimhen insists belief in the future of the Super Eagles is still strong.
