A Kano-based man, Abubakar Muhammad, has accused the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre of medical negligence following the death of his wife, Aishatu Umar.
Newsonspot reports that Muhammad alleged that his wife, a mother of five, died from complications arising from a surgical procedure carried out at the state-owned hospital located in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
Speaking with journalists, Muhammad said Aishatu passed away in the early hours of Monday, about four months after doctors allegedly left a pair of surgical scissors in her stomach during an operation performed in September.
He explained that shortly after the surgery, his wife began experiencing severe and persistent abdominal pain. Despite several visits back to the hospital to complain about her condition, Muhammad said doctors only prescribed painkillers and failed to carry out further medical investigations.
“Each time she went back to complain, they only gave her painkillers and said the pain was normal after surgery. They never advised an X-ray or scan,” he said.

According to Muhammad, her health continued to deteriorate over the months until she was taken to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where medical tests and scans were eventually conducted.
He said the results revealed that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her body during the earlier operation. Although plans were reportedly made for corrective surgery to remove the object, Aishatu died before the procedure could be carried out.
Describing the incident as gross negligence, Muhammad said the loss had caused his family deep pain and raised serious concerns about professional standards within the healthcare system.
“While we know death is inevitable, we cannot understand how such a mistake could happen during surgery. This kind of incident weakens public trust in medical institutions,” he said.
He called on the Kano State Government and relevant health authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed the directive on Tuesday, stating that the probe would establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the case.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family. The investigation will be transparent, impartial, and professional, and appropriate action will be taken if negligence is established,” the statement said.
The Board also assured the public that patient safety remains a top priority and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high healthcare standards across Kano State.
