It is a sad moment for fans and lovers of Yoruba gospel music as popular gospel singer and evangelist, Bunmi Akinnanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi, has passed away.
Newsonspot reports that it was revealed the singer died on Wednesday, January 14, after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness linked to her leg. She was 46 years old at the time of her death.
Bunmi Akinnanu’s health challenges became public knowledge in 2025 after a video surfaced online showing her visibly weak during a prayer session. In the footage, the singer struggled to speak, shed tears, and appeared emotionally distressed. Her leg was noticeably swollen, while her hand was bandaged, as a pastor prayed for her healing and encouraged her to keep faith.

Before her passing, the gospel singer had openly appealed for prayers and divine intervention. Her condition later drew the attention of fellow gospel artistes, including Yinka Alaseyori and Sarah Apekeola, who took to social media to solicit financial support for her medical treatment. Other artistes such as Olabest, Alayo Melody, and Lanre Alewilese also joined in the call for assistance.
Just a day before the sad news broke, popular cleric Pastor Segun Arole had expressed concern about her condition on Instagram, calling for transparency and updates on her health. He urged those close to her to speak up if more funds were needed for her treatment, stressing that her life should be saved.
Sadly, despite prayers and financial support from well-wishers, all efforts to restore her health proved unsuccessful.
Bunmi Akinnanu was best known for her hit gospel song “Omije Ojumi,” which touched many lives and earned her a loyal following within the Yoruba gospel music community. Her death comes amid a series of recent losses in the Nigerian entertainment and gospel music industry.
