Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its newly installed substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carter Dike Umeoduagu, who reportedly died just days after assuming office.
Newsonspot gathered that the Vice-Chancellor was formally sworn in on Thursday, October 1, 2026, marking the beginning of his tenure at the university.
However, barely 48 hours after the ceremony, the newly appointed 44-year-old professor reportedly took ill on Saturday, October 3.
He was said to have died in the middle of the night, although details surrounding his illness and the circumstances of his death were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
The development has sent shock waves through the university community, colleagues, family members and associates, coming at a particularly sensitive period in the institution’s history.
Tansian University has recently faced a prolonged leadership crisis involving competing claims over the institution’s top administrative position. The controversy had included developments surrounding the tenure of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eugene Okoye Nwadialor, and the emergence of an acting leadership structure.
The late Vice-Chancellor was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata 1 Constituency.
His sudden death, coming almost immediately after his formal assumption of office, has added a tragic dimension to the university’s recent leadership challenges.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of his death had not been made public.
The university community is expected to mourn the academic and administrator, whose tenure at the institution ended almost as soon as it began.
May his soul rest in peace.
