The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has confirmed that 23 people lost their lives while 108 others sustained injuries following multiple explosions in Maiduguri on Monday evening.
Newsonspot reports that according to the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, preliminary investigations revealed that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The incidents reportedly occurred at about 7:24 p.m.
The explosions targeted key locations within the city, including the popular Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area.
Security agencies, comprising Police Tactical Units, military personnel, and other joint operatives, were immediately deployed to the affected areas to manage the situation and prevent further attacks. The scenes were swiftly secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted thorough sweep operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the affected locations for an on-the-spot assessment and expressed condolences to victims and their families.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Authorities have since restored normalcy in the affected areas, with heightened security measures put in place across the metropolis to forestall further incidents.
Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies, as efforts continue to maintain peace and security in the state.
