Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the iconic number 20 shirt worn by Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, following the tragic deaths of Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a fatal car crash earlier this month in northern Spain.
Newsonspot reported the accident occurred just 11 days after Jota had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini when it veered off the road and caught fire.
In a statement released on Friday, the club said:
“After consultation with his wife, Rute, and family, the club can announce the squad number will be retired in honour and memory of Diogo across all levels, including LFC Women and Academy.”
Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards noted the rarity of the gesture, stating:
“I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”
The Reds will return to action this Sunday in a pre-season fixture against Preston, their first match since the heartbreaking loss. A powerful tribute is planned before kickoff at 1400 GMT, including a live rendition of the club’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a wreath-laying ceremony by Preston, a minute of silence, black armbands worn by both teams, and digital tributes around the stadium.
Last Saturday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot and key players such as club captain Virgil van Dijk attended Jota’s funeral, a solemn ceremony that reflected the deep sorrow felt by the entire football community.
Jota, a father of three and beloved figure at Anfield, will be remembered not only for his impact on the pitch but for his character and spirit off it.
