In a devastating turn of events, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a fatal car crash in northern Spain.
Newsonspot reports that the incident occurred just 11 days after Jota tied the knot with his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a lavish ceremony in Porto.
Jota, 27, and Andre, 26, were travelling in a Lamborghini on the A-52 highway in Zamora province when the car reportedly suffered a tyre blow-out while overtaking, veered off the road, and burst into flames. Emergency services arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m. Thursday but confirmed both men died on the spot.
Andre Silva, also a professional footballer, played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel. Both brothers were widely respected figures in the football community.
Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed sorrow, calling it “a sad day for football and for national and international sports.” Portuguese FA President Pedro Proença called Jota “much more than a fantastic player… an extraordinary person.” A minute’s silence is expected before Portugal’s upcoming Women’s Euro qualifier against Spain.
The news comes as a heartbreaking blow to Jota’s wife Rute and their three children. Just days ago, she shared wedding photos with the caption, “My dream came true,” to which Jota replied, “I’m the lucky one.”
Liverpool FC is expected to release an official statement soon as the football world mourns the shocking loss of two promising lives.
