The protest is occurring under tight security surveillance, with officers from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and other units strategically positioned around the toll gate. A security official instructed the protesters to relocate to designated protest areas. When the protesters refused, the police responded with tear gas to scatter the crowd.

Hunger protesters on Thursday converged at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, in compliance with a court order restricting them to the facility. Protesters gathered as early as 6 am singing solidarity songs. Present at the stadium are heavily armed security operatives. Activists and groups had declared the protest in response to the economic hardship. The protests are expected to last for 10 days.
