The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Peter Obi, has stepped up diplomatic efforts to address the growing concerns surrounding xenophobic attacks and the welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.
Newsonspot reports that Obi disclosed this in a Facebook post on Saturday, revealing that he held high-level meetings with key South African ministers and political party leaders following reports of rising tensions, insecurity, and emotional distress among Nigerians residing in the country.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the meetings came shortly after his engagement with members of the Nigerian community in Cape Town, where issues relating to safety, immigration, peaceful coexistence, and the treatment of African foreigners were discussed.
Obi stated that he met with Leon Schreiber, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs and a leading member of the Democratic Alliance; Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs as well as leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
The discussions reportedly focused on immigration policies, regional cooperation, youth unemployment, economic challenges, security concerns, and the increasing tension faced by African immigrants, particularly Nigerians in South Africa.
Describing the conversations as productive and sincere, Obi stressed the importance of dialogue, justice, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law in resolving issues affecting both nations.
He noted that Nigeria and South Africa, as two of Africa’s leading countries, must work together to strengthen peaceful coexistence and discourage violence, hate speech, and provocation.
“In challenging times, leaders and citizens alike must demonstrate compassion, restraint, and responsible leadership,” Obi stated.
The former governor further emphasized that Africa’s development depends on unity, economic inclusion, community investment, and protecting the dignity of every African regardless of nationality or place of residence.
The development has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians commending Obi’s diplomatic approach and concern for Nigerians living abroad.
