The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has explained the reason behind the recent power outage affecting several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), revealing that the disruption was caused by a faulty transformer at the Apo Substation.
Newsonspot reports that according to a statement issued on Saturday by Ndidi Mbah, one of the 100 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) 132/33 Kilo Volt (KV) transformers at the Apo Substation developed a fault after tripping on a differential relay indication at about 12:56 a.m. on Friday while operating on no load.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had earlier informed residents across several parts of Abuja about the blackout, attributing the outage to a technical fault affecting power supply.
TCN disclosed that its maintenance team initially discovered oil spillage around the transformer during inspection. Further investigations later confirmed faults in the red and yellow phase 33KV bushings of the affected 100MVA transformer.
Mrs. Mbah explained that engineers have already restored the red phase bushing, while repair work continues on the yellow phase to fully stabilize electricity supply.
She added that TCN has advised the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to temporarily source electricity from alternative feeders within TCN’s network coverage pending the completion of repair works.
The company also apologized to affected electricity consumers and AEDC customers for the inconvenience caused by the transformer failure, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.
