Household kerosene prices recorded sharp increases across Nigeria in April 2026, with residents in several states now paying close to N4,000 per litre, according to the latest Household Kerosene Price Watch released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Newsonspot reports that the report showed that Sokoto recorded the highest average retail price at N3,965.10 per litre, followed by Kebbi at N3,808.75 and Lagos at N3,790.90 per litre.
Other states with high kerosene prices included Katsina, Edo, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara, where the product sold above N3,300 per litre during the month under review.
In contrast, Bayelsa recorded the lowest average price at N1,815.40 per litre, while residents in Kogi and Yobe paid N1,982.02 and N2,235.77 respectively.
The NBS also reported significant month-on-month increases between March and April 2026, with Kaduna recording the highest jump at 35.16 per cent. Bayelsa, Katsina, Imo and Akwa Ibom also witnessed notable price hikes.
Kerosene, once considered one of the most affordable cooking fuels in Nigeria, previously sold between N50 and N100 per litre before the removal of subsidy in 2016 and the continued depreciation of the naira triggered persistent increases in petroleum product prices.
The rising cost has forced many households to abandon kerosene for alternatives such as cooking gas, firewood and charcoal as economic hardship continues to affect millions of Nigerians.
