Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has launched the second edition of its flagship BeatTheDistance initiative, donating 3,000 bicycles to schoolchildren in underserved communities across six Nigerian states to improve access to education.

Newsonspot reports that the 2026 programme will benefit pupils in Ebonyi, Jigawa, Benue, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, and Ekiti states, helping them overcome the challenge of travelling long distances to school.

The initiative, which builds on the success of its maiden edition in 2019, is part of GTCO’s broader corporate social investment strategy aimed at eliminating barriers to education and promoting sustainable community development.

According to the company, the bicycle donation programme is designed to ease transportation challenges, improve school attendance and punctuality, reduce fatigue caused by long daily walks, and enhance students’ overall learning experience.

GTCO noted that many children in rural and underserved communities trek several kilometres every day to attend school, a situation that often leads to lateness, absenteeism and poor academic performance.

Speaking on the initiative, the Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO, Segun Agbaje, described education as one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and creating opportunities for future generations.

He said the BeatTheDistance initiative is aimed at supporting students whose determination to pursue education is often hindered by the long distances they must travel daily.

Agbaje explained that providing bicycles to deserving pupils would reduce the physical burden of commuting, improve punctuality and attendance, and enable students to concentrate more on their studies and achieve their academic potential.

He added that GTCO’s commitment goes beyond financial services, stressing that the Group remains focused on addressing practical challenges affecting communities where it operates.

According to him, the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to investing in young people, expanding access to opportunities, promoting inclusion and contributing to sustainable national development.

GTCO also stated that the programme aligns with its long-standing support for education, youth empowerment and community advancement, noting that reducing travel time will allow students to devote more energy to classroom learning and personal development.

Education stakeholders have consistently identified transportation as a major obstacle to quality education in rural communities, where many children walk several kilometres to school every day.

By distributing bicycles, GTCO aims to improve school attendance, encourage better academic performance, increase retention rates and ensure that distance no longer stands in the way of quality education.

The financial services group reiterated that the initiative reflects its vision of creating shared value through impactful investments that improve lives and support national development.

GTCO is one of Africa’s leading financial services groups, with operations across several African countries and the United Kingdom. The company provides banking and non-banking services, including payments, asset and fund management, as well as pension fund administration, while maintaining a strong commitment to innovation, corporate governance and sustainable development.
