A touching video of a Catholic priest embracing a crying elderly man during Mass has gone viral in Brazil, moving millions of viewers across social media.
Newsonspot reports that the emotional moment happened on January 18 at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, as Fr. Carlos Henrique Fernandes, of the Diocese of Tubarão in Santa Catarina, was celebrating Mass.
According to reports, the elderly man, identified as Marcos, was a longtime extraordinary minister of Holy Communion in the parish. He attended the Mass with his wife that day, although he was not scheduled to assist with the distribution of Communion.
During the celebration, Marcos reportedly stepped out briefly after receiving a call from a relative. When he returned, he appeared visibly shaken and overwhelmed with emotion.
Fr. Fernandes said he noticed Marcos approaching the altar while he was concluding the Eucharistic prayer, moments before Communion.
“I was concluding the Eucharistic prayer when I saw him coming. I didn’t know what was happening, but he was visibly shaken. I even feared he might be having a heart attack,” the priest said.
In response, the priest interrupted the consecration and embraced Marcos for a long moment as the elderly man continued to weep.
Members of the community also rushed in to support him, taking him to a nearby room where he was given water and helped to sit down.
After continuing the prayers and distributing Communion to the congregation, Fr. Fernandes said he went to meet Marcos again and ensured he also received Communion before being taken home.
It was at that point the priest learned the heartbreaking reason behind Marcos’ distress: he had just received news that his 20-year-old grandson, who lived in a nearby city, had taken his own life.
A parishioner who witnessed the incident described it as an intensely emotional moment for everyone present, saying the priest explained that a tragedy had just happened to Marcos.
Fr. Fernandes later reflected that Marcos came forward in desperation because he was seeking comfort and the presence of Jesus.
“Not knowing whom to turn to, he remembered Jesus Christ… We’ve known each other for 20 years, we’re friends,” he said.
The priest added that he strongly believed the elderly man needed spiritual strength at that moment, which was why he made sure Marcos received Holy Communion.
“I firmly believe in the power of Jesus’s presence… in the Eucharist. Marcos desperately needed it, especially at that moment,” he said.
The video spread widely the following week, attracting millions of views. While many praised the priest’s compassion and the powerful show of humanity, others criticised the interruption of the Eucharistic prayer.
However, Fr. Fernandes defended his actions, saying he would not hesitate to do the same again.
“I accept the diversity of opinions, but if something like that happened again, I would do the same. For me, faith manifests itself in our actions,” he said.
He explained that ignoring Marcos at that moment would have been wrong, stressing that faith must also reflect in how people treat those suffering around them.
A few days after the Mass, the priest said he received an update that Marcos was calmer and gradually finding peace, noting that faith plays a major role in healing and coping with grief.
“Life can be very hard and priests must be side by side with the people,” he said, adding, “Like Pope Francis said, we must be shepherds with the smell of the sheep.”
