FG, KPMG Meet to Resolve Disagreements Over Implementation of Nigeria’s New Tax Laws…

The Federal Government on Monday held a high-level meeting with senior executives of KPMG, the global professional services firm, in a bid to address concerns and differing interpretations surrounding the implementation of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws.

Newsonspot reports that the engagement, which took place in Abuja, followed growing debate within the business, financial and professional communities over how the new tax framework could affect corporate operations, investment decisions and taxpayer obligations. The discussions were prompted by a recent report issued by KPMG Nigeria titled “Nigeria’s New Tax Laws: Inherent Errors, Inconsistencies, Gaps and Omissions,” in which the firm raised red flags over several provisions of the legislation.

In the report, KPMG highlighted perceived shortcomings in areas such as the taxation of shares, the treatment of dividends, compliance requirements for non-resident entities, and foreign exchange deductions. The firm warned that ambiguities and inconsistencies in these provisions could create uncertainty for businesses and impose unintended burdens on taxpayers if left unaddressed.

KPMG subsequently called on the government to review the legislation, arguing that the identified errors, omissions and gaps required urgent attention to ensure clarity, fairness and ease of compliance. The report sparked public exchanges, including a response from the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, who strongly defended the Nigeria Tax Act. Oyedele maintained that the intent and structure of the reforms had been misunderstood and insisted that KPMG Nigeria had not fully grasped the objectives underpinning the new tax regime.

At Monday’s meeting, however, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, offered detailed explanations on several of the contentious provisions raised in KPMG’s report. According to officials familiar with the discussions, these clarifications helped shed light on the government’s policy intentions and resolved a number of ambiguities associated with the implementation of the tax laws.

In response, the KPMG delegation acknowledged that aspects of its earlier assessment had been misinterpreted and expressed regret over the resulting misunderstanding. The firm also requested further clarification on certain sections of the legislation and pointed out areas where additional professional input and technical recommendations could still enhance the effectiveness of the reforms.

Both parties agreed that differences in interpretation had contributed to confusion among taxpayers and stakeholders, underscoring the need for ongoing dialogue. They affirmed that continuous engagement between the government and professional bodies would be essential to addressing emerging challenges and ensuring the smooth implementation of the tax reforms.

The KPMG team also praised Dr. Adedeji for what it described as his proactive leadership and the timely rollout of the new tax framework, noting that many of its initial concerns had been sufficiently clarified during the engagement.

In a statement shared on (formerly Twitter), the Nigeria Revenue Service confirmed the meeting, stating: “The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, today received a delegation of top management from KPMG on a courtesy visit. The KPMG executives commended the Executive Chairman for his leadership and the timely implementation of the new tax laws, noting that their initial apprehensions have been significantly allayed.”

The statement further noted that KPMG affirmed that the tax reforms were “necessary and timely” and pledged its continued professional support to strengthen tax administration and contribute to Nigeria’s broader economic growth objectives.
