The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, has clarified that the title of Iyaloja has no place in Benin tradition.
Newsonspot gathered that the monarch made this known during the visit of Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja General of Nigeria, who had informed him of her mission to install Pastor Josephine Ivbazebule as the Iyaloja of all markets in Edo State.
Responding, the Oba explained that in Benin culture, market leadership is vested in the Iyeki, a traditional role deeply connected to the palace. The Iyeki, he said, is chosen by traders but must be confirmed by the Oba before assuming office.
“Iyaloja is alien to us here in Benin. You are in Benin, the home of culture; we have our culture here. Every Iyeki has a special relationship with the palace and carries out cultural roles in the shrines within the markets on behalf of the Oba,” the monarch stated.
He emphasized that the concept of a “general” leader for all markets does not exist in Benin customs. Instead, each market – such as Oba Market and Ogiso Market – has its own independent Iyeki.
Chief Osaro Idah, speaking on behalf of the Oba, further clarified that while the Iyaloja title may hold significance in Yoruba culture, it is not recognized in Benin.
“The novelty of a general Iyeki is alien to Benin custom and tradition. Iyeki is particular to each market, and no one has authority over another,” he explained.
The palace reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Benin’s rich cultural heritage, stressing that traditional practices will not be altered by external influences.
