DStv Slashes Decoder Price by 50% Amid Price Hike Backlash…

In a strategic move to regain customer trust and boost subscriptions, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50% price slash on its DStv decoder, reducing the cost from N20,000 to N10,000.

Newsonspot reports that the offer, which is part of the company’s new customer-focused campaign titled “We’ve Got You”, launched on June 16 and will run until July 31.

Aiming for Affordability and Accessibility

According to MultiChoice Nigeria, the decoder price slash is designed to attract new users and support existing customers, especially during challenging economic times. The campaign also includes free package upgrades for both active and returning subscribers.

John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, stated that the initiative highlights the company’s commitment to rewarding customer loyalty and enhancing everyday TV viewing.

“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” Ugbe said.

“This campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone – not just football fans.”

More Content, Less Cost

MultiChoice says it wants to reposition DStv as a platform for daily value, encouraging subscribers to explore diverse content – from movies and dramas to kids’ shows and news.

“This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” the company said.

Controversy Over Previous Price Hikes

The new promotion comes shortly after a legal dispute with Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) following a controversial 25% price increase across various DStv and GOtv packages.

On February 24, MultiChoice announced a price hike effective March 1, raising:

DStv Compact from N15,700 to N19,000

Compact Plus from N25,000 to N30,000

Premium from N37,000 to N44,500

GOtv Supa Plus from N15,700 to N16,800

The move was widely criticized and prompted the FCCPC to summon the company’s CEO. Despite regulatory pressure, MultiChoice proceeded with the hike and filed a legal suit, which was eventually dismissed on May 8 by the court, citing abuse of process.

Conclusion

With its decoder price slash and customer-friendly upgrades, MultiChoice Nigeria appears to be rebalancing its relationship with consumers after a period of public scrutiny. Whether this effort will restore customer confidence remains to be seen, but for now, the offer brings some relief to TV lovers across Nigeria.
