The Lagos State Government has evacuated residents and business operators from a distressed four-storey building on Lagos Island after structural inspections revealed serious defects that posed an imminent risk of collapse.
Newsonspot reports that the evacuation was carried out by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) at No. 10 Dogara Street, Lagos Island, following a routine structural assessment that uncovered multiple signs of severe deterioration.
According to the agency, the inspection identified major structural defects, including significant foundation settlement, extensive cracks in critical structural elements, reinforced concrete slab failure, exposed reinforcement bars in columns and slabs, doors that no longer closed properly, and a badly compromised foundation. Based on these findings, the building was declared unsafe for human occupation.
As a precautionary measure to prevent potential loss of lives and destruction of property, LASBCA immediately evacuated all occupants, including residents and business owners.
Speaking on the development, the agency’s General Manager, Bldr. Gbaye Florence, said the prompt action helped avert what could have been a major building collapse, safeguarding both occupants and neighbouring properties.
She reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive building safety enforcement and regular inspections. She also urged residents to promptly report buildings showing signs of structural distress, such as visible cracks, excessive deflection, foundation settlement, or any other indication of structural instability.
The agency assured the public that it will continue to strengthen routine inspections, monitoring, and enforcement of building safety regulations to ensure compliance with established standards and promote a safer built environment across Lagos State.
