Cycling legend, Sir Bradley Wiggins and his wife Cath are separating after 16 years of marriage.
The British Olympic champion, 40, tweeted the news last night and said their two children remained ‘a priority’.
He wrote: ‘It is with deep sadness my wife Cath and I have decided to separate. Our two children remain our priority and we ask for privacy at this time. Brad & Cath.’
The couple, who got married in 2004, have two children together. They first met in 1997 before reconnecting at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
The cycling star enjoyed huge success in his sporting career, claiming gold medals in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 games. In 2016, he won gold at the Rio Olympics and became Britain’s most decorated Olympian with eight medals at the tournament.
During his career, he also faced allegations of doping, which he claimed had a huge impact on his wife. He denied any wrongdoing but said the allegations levelled at him in 2016 “almost killed his wife” before she checked into rehab.
Speaking to the Guardian in 2018, he said: “People have free rein to put their own facts in place. Kids read headlines and their parents say things about you.
“You end up saying to your kids: ‘Just tell them to f****** do one.’ They do and it’s your kids in trouble.
“Then the BBC show up on your doorstep and you can’t take your kids to school. You tell the BBC, ‘I can’t talk to you, because there’s an investigation.'”
