Despite being worth over $100 billion, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has made it clear that his children will inherit only about 1% of his vast fortune, with the rest going to charity.
Newsonspot reports that this decision, shared by both Bill and Melinda French Gates, reflects their desire to keep their family grounded – even while raising their children in a luxurious $130 million lakeside mansion.
That philosophy continues to shape the Gates children, who have each built impressive lives of their own. The eldest, Jennifer Gates, made headlines in 2023 after purchasing a $51 million penthouse in Manhattan’s prestigious Tribeca neighborhood at just 26. The 8,900-square-foot residence includes an additional 3,400 square feet of outdoor space and a private plunge pool.
The converted warehouse building, famous for its celebrity residents like Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Meg Ryan, is one of New York’s most exclusive addresses. Jennifer, a Stanford graduate and professional equestrian, now lives there with her husband, Olympic rider Nayel Nassar, and their first child. The couple also reportedly bought the former home of Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton through a Seattle-based trust.
While their lifestyle may seem like the epitome of privilege, Melinda French Gates once explained in an interview with Elle magazine that she strived to keep her family’s daily life as “normal” as possible.
“I wanted the kids to be seen for who they were,” she said. “My oldest daughter went in with Gates; she felt ready to take that name on. My son chose not to – he used French all the way through high school.”
For Melinda, allowing her children to make personal choices – like which last name to use – was part of helping them grow up beyond their father’s fame.
“I just tried to keep them in the real world,” she added. “We had real discussions about how our family was different, but you shouldn’t think any more of yourself because of that.”
Of course, “staying grounded” takes on a unique meaning when your childhood home includes a gym, trampoline room, and private beach access. Yet, the message remains clear: success isn’t about excess – it’s about understanding the value of what you own and using it wisely.
