Advertising Agencies Must Evolve With AI to Stay Relevant, Experts Warn…

Advertising professionals have been urged to continuously evolve their skills, operating models and creative approaches to remain relevant in an industry being reshaped by artificial intelligence, changing consumer behaviour and emerging technologies.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria in Lagos, Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank Plc, described the transformation of advertising as an opportunity for practitioners to rethink how they create value, serve clients and connect brands with consumers.

Addressing participants on the theme, “AdVolution: The End of Advertising as We Know It and How to Win What Comes Next,” Nwagboh noted that the advertising industry has entered a new phase. He explained that the methods, structures and assumptions that defined the profession in previous years may no longer be sufficient in an environment influenced by data, automation, artificial intelligence and evolving audience expectations.

According to him, the end of advertising as previously practised should not be viewed as a crisis. Instead, it should serve as a call for agencies and professionals to evolve, build stronger organisations, develop more intelligent campaigns and create responsible communication systems.

He stressed that evolution requires more than adopting new technology. It involves developing a deeper understanding of people, culture and markets, while strengthening the strategic and creative capabilities required to use technology effectively.

Nwagboh cautioned practitioners against allowing artificial intelligence to weaken originality or replace critical thinking. He observed that the agencies most likely to lead the industry would not necessarily be those with the greatest number of AI tools, but those with strong strategic thinkers, a deep understanding of culture and the judgement to determine when and how technology should be applied.

He encouraged agencies to use artificial intelligence to reduce repetitive work while preserving the originality, imagination and human insight that distinguish impactful advertising. In his view, technology should support creativity rather than diminish it.

The continuing evolution of the industry also requires agencies to reconsider the role of data. Nwagboh explained that future-ready agencies must be able to convert data into insight, insight into strategy, strategy into compelling stories and those stories into measurable results. He added that technology would remain a tool, while creativity, trust and relevance would continue to shape the relationship between brands and their audiences.

President of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria, Lanre Adisa, similarly urged agencies to embrace change and develop the capabilities required to compete in a rapidly evolving environment. He identified the failure to adapt as a greater threat than change itself and emphasised the importance of talent development and a stronger understanding of how emerging technologies can complement human creativity.

Also speaking, Tomiwa Aladekomo, Chief Executive Officer of Big Cabal Media, acknowledged that artificial intelligence was changing the rules of the industry. He, however, maintained that human creativity remained a critical differentiator because technology could support the creative process but could not replace intuition, cultural understanding and original thinking.

Kelechi Nwosu, Chairman of the conference and a member of the AAAN Board of Trustees, encouraged agencies to look beyond producing work for clients and explore opportunities to own intellectual property. He identified imagination as one of the industry’s most valuable assets and urged practitioners to apply it towards developing new and commercially rewarding idea

Representing the Governor of Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, described the conference theme as timely, noting that while technology continues to influence society and business, creativity remains a distinctively human capability.

The discussions underscored a common message for advertising professionals. Evolution is no longer optional. Agencies that deliberately invest in people, rethink established practices, adopt technology responsibly and remain attentive to changing consumer expectations will be better positioned to lead the next phase of the industry.

The future of advertising will therefore depend on the ability of practitioners to preserve the enduring strengths of human creativity while continuously adapting to new tools, behaviours and business models. In a marketplace where change is constant, evolution will remain the bridge between present relevance and future leadership.
