British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after serving less than two years in office, bringing an end to a turbulent tenure marked by political controversies, policy reversals, and declining public support.
Newsonspot gathered that while speaking emotionally outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said his decision was driven by what he believed was in the best interest of the country.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he stated.
The outgoing prime minister confirmed that the Labour Party would begin the process of selecting a new leader in July.
He said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen, with the transition expected to be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Starmer pledged to ensure a smooth transfer of power and promised his full support to whoever emerges as the next Labour leader.
“I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said, adding that his successor would inherit “a Britain that is far stronger and fairer” than the one he took over two years ago.
His resignation comes despite months of insisting he would remain in office amid growing pressure from within and outside his party. Multiple scandals, policy missteps, and high-profile resignations had intensified calls for him to step down.
One of the major controversies during his administration was his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to Washington, a move that sparked criticism and nearly led to his removal in March.
Starmer also struggled to contain the growing influence of the anti-immigration Reform UK, which dealt a significant blow to Labour by outperforming the party in local elections held in May.
His departure means Britain is set to welcome its seventh prime minister in just a decade. The announcement comes a day before the 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum, a historic vote that led to the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and ushered in years of political instability.
Despite the challenges that overshadowed his administration, Starmer is widely credited with transforming the Labour Party into an election-winning force, leading it to a decisive victory in 2024 and ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
Attention is now turning to veteran politician Andy Burnham, who recently secured a return to Parliament after winning a crucial special election, positioning himself as a leading contender in the upcoming Labour leadership race.
