Senator Dandutse Muntari Mohammed has condemned the recurring xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, describing the situation as unfair given Nigeria’s openness to South African businesses.
Newsonspot reports that the lawmaker made the remarks during an interview from 2:59 on TV Platinum, where he expressed frustration over what he sees as a contradiction between South Africa’s economic gains in Nigeria and the treatment of Nigerians within its borders.
Highlighting the strong presence of South African companies in Nigeria, he said: “In Nigeria today, we allow South African businesses to thrive. There is Stanbic IBTC bank, MTN, DSTV. They are making hundreds of billions of dollars in Nigeria.”
The senator specifically referenced major firms such as Stanbic IBTC Bank, MTN Group, and MultiChoice Group, operators of the popular DStv platform. According to him, these companies have flourished in Nigeria’s business-friendly environment, generating significant revenue while benefiting from a large consumer base.
Mohammed argued that such economic cooperation should be reciprocated with respect and protection for Nigerians living and working in South Africa. He warned that continued attacks could strain bilateral relations and provoke calls for policy reassessment regarding foreign businesses operating in Nigeria.
