The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday in celebration of this year’s International Workers’ Day, recognising the vital contributions of Nigerian workers to national development.

Newsonspot reports that the announcement was made by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, according to an official statement issued in Abuja and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

The government noted that Workers’ Day provides an important opportunity to honour the dedication, resilience, and commitment of employees across both the public and private sectors. It highlighted the role of workers in sustaining economic growth, strengthening institutions, and ensuring effective service delivery nationwide.

Tunji-Ojo commended Nigerian workers for their continued efforts, stating that their contributions remain central to the country’s progress, productivity, and innovation. He urged citizens to uphold values such as patriotism, discipline, and diligence, describing them as key drivers of national advancement.

Reaffirming its commitment to workers’ welfare, the Federal Government pledged to continue implementing policies aimed at improving living standards, enhancing security, and creating a more supportive environment for businesses and job creation.

The administration, he added, remains focused on economic reforms designed to boost employment opportunities, increase incomes, and promote sustainable development across the country.

The minister also encouraged Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the holiday, while reflecting on the importance of unity, hard work, and collective responsibility in nation-building.

He concluded by wishing workers across the federation a fulfilling and successful celebration.

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is observed annually to celebrate the achievements of workers and the labour movement worldwide.

The event traces its origins to 19th-century labour rights struggles, which advocated for fair wages, improved working conditions, and shorter working hours.

In Nigeria, the day is traditionally marked with parades, speeches, and organised events led by unions such as the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.

These gatherings often serve as platforms for labour leaders to address key issues, including wages, inflation, pensions, and broader economic policies affecting workers.

In recent years, rising inflation and increased cost of living have intensified calls for improved worker welfare and better remuneration across multiple sectors.
