FG Launches Learner ID System to Transform Nigeria’s Education Sector…

The Federal Government has unveiled a nationwide Learner Identification Number (LIN) system, a major digital reform aimed at giving every Nigerian student a permanent academic identity.

Newsonspot reports that leading by the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative is designed to improve access to education, strengthen planning, and ensure that no child is left behind. By assigning each learner a unique number, the system will enable better tracking, support, and assessment throughout a student’s academic journey.

Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the LIN rollout as a turning point for Nigeria’s education sector. He noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu, particularly in advancing human capital development and improving public service delivery through technology.

According to the Minister, the system goes beyond data collection. It promotes equity, transparency, and equal opportunity for all learners while helping the government plan effectively for the future.

In its pilot phase, over 1.9 million candidates sitting for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council have already been assigned LINs. This step is expected to strengthen examination credibility and ensure that each candidate is properly linked to their academic record.

The LIN system captures essential student information, including state, local government area, school, and a unique student code. This ensures that academic records remain consistent and traceable, even when students move between schools or across states.

Education experts believe the reform will address long-standing challenges such as poor record-keeping, student dropouts, and unreliable data. With a centralised digital database, authorities can now monitor enrollment, attendance, and student progression more effectively.

Beyond tracking, the initiative is also expected to curb examination malpractice and impersonation by linking students to verified identities and registered institutions. This will boost the integrity and transparency of public examinations across the country.

The system is powered by the Digitised National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), which provides a national database of schools, each with a unique identification number. This forms the foundation of a more integrated and efficient education system.

Looking ahead, the government plans to expand the LIN system to cover all learners in both public and private schools nationwide. This will be implemented through national data platforms and the Annual School Census to ensure full coverage.

The Ministry has called on schools, parents, examination bodies, and students to support the initiative, stressing that its success depends on collective participation.

With this reform, the Federal Government reaffirms its commitment to building a modern, transparent, and inclusive education system that secures the future of every Nigerian child.
