President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded Nigeria’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), to renowned businessman and philanthropist, Ambassador Gilbert Chagoury.
Newsonspot reports that the honour was officially conveyed through an Instrument of Conferment of National Honour signed by President Tinubu in his role as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to the instrument, the award was made under the powers granted to the President by Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, in recognition of Chagoury’s exceptional service, dedication, and long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s development.
With the conferment, Ambassador Chagoury is now entitled to the title, dignity, and full privileges of the GCON, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious national honours, usually reserved for individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the nation.
The honour was granted in Abuja on January 8, 2026, under the hand and public seal of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Gilbert Chagoury, a long-time associate of President Tinubu, is widely respected in Nigeria’s business and philanthropic circles. His investments and charitable efforts span key sectors including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social development, making him a significant contributor to national growth.
