The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday, November 28, 2025, invited the founder of Baze University, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, over public comments considered inciting and capable of raising tension in the country.
Newsonspot reports that according to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, unnamed security sources confirmed that the DSS raised concerns about Baba-Ahmed’s recent media appearances, especially his repeated claims of a “constitutional crisis” in Nigeria.
One of the sources noted that the 2023 Labour Party Vice Presidential Candidate had, a few days earlier, appeared on national television, accusing the judiciary and military of enabling the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. The source added that Baba-Ahmed allegedly suggested that the inauguration emboldened the military to disrespect authorities, referring to them as “bloody fools.”
Security officials fear that such statements, coming at a sensitive time in Nigeria’s political climate, could heighten national tension. They also drew parallels with how similar narratives contributed to instability in countries like Guinea-Bissau.
The source explained that the DSS is approaching the issue carefully, stressing that the invitation is not political but meant to safeguard Nigeria’s stability. Baba-Ahmed’s description of security improvement efforts as a “joke” was also flagged as capable of weakening public trust in key institutions.
According to the source, DSS engagements of this nature are preventive, not punitive. They are aimed at clarifying intentions, preventing misinterpretation, and ensuring that public commentary does not unintentionally fuel unrest.
