The federal government (FG) has ordered the immediate shutdown of 47 Unity Colleges across Nigeria due to growing security threats in several parts of the country.
Newsonspot reports that the directive was issued in a circular released on Friday, citing “recent security challenges and the need to prevent any security breaches.” The approval for the closure came from the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
The circular was signed by Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education, on behalf of the minister. Principals of all affected schools have been instructed to comply fully with the order.

Within one week in November, two major attacks on schools were recorded.
On November 17, gunmen invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting about 25 students and killing the vice-principal.

Again, on November 21, armed men attacked St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri community, Agwara LGA of Niger State. The number of abducted students has not yet been confirmed.
