The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week nationwide warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria, beginning Monday, October 13, 2025.
Newsonspot reports that ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press briefing held at the union’s national headquarters in the University of Abuja on Sunday.
According to Piwuna, the strike followed the Federal Government’s continued failure to honour agreements previously reached with the union, including demands for improved university funding, better working conditions, and full implementation of past commitments.
“We have exhausted all avenues for dialogue. The government’s inaction has left us with no choice but to embark on this warning strike,” he stated.
He further directed all ASUU branches across public universities to suspend academic activities with effect from midnight, stressing that the action would be total and comprehensive.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th of September 2025,” Piwuna said.
The strike announcement coincides with President Bola Tinubu’s departure from Nigeria for an official engagement abroad.
