The United Kingdom has announced a major change to its visa system, confirming that from February 25, 2026, visitors who require a visa will receive only an electronic visa (eVisa).
Newsonspot reports that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) disclosed the update in a statement, advising travellers to create a UKVI account and view their eVisa online before travelling to the UK.
An eVisa is a digital record of a person’s identity and immigration status, including the type of visa issued, settlement status, and conditions such as permission to work or study. The UK government explained that eVisas are replacing physical immigration documents, including biometric residence permits, biometric residence cards, and visa stickers in passports.
Travellers will usually receive an eVisa after successfully applying for a visa or permission to stay in the UK. Once issued, they can view their eVisa online and generate a share code to prove their immigration status when needed, such as for employment or housing. Travellers must also link their passport or travel document details to the system before travelling.
The UK government confirmed that setting up a UKVI account and accessing an eVisa is free. Officials have advised visa holders to register early and confirm their details to avoid travel disruptions at airlines and border control points.
For international travellers, including Nigerians who frequently visit the UK for study, business, or tourism, the move signals a growing global shift toward digital identity and immigration systems. While authorities say the change will improve efficiency and security, travellers may need time to adjust to managing their immigration status online instead of using physical documents.
As the deadline approaches, travellers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the eVisa process to ensure smooth travel, as the UK continues to expand digital verification in its immigration system.
