Suspected terrorists have launched a deadly attack on two churches in Kaduna State, killing at least seven worshippers and abducting several others during Easter celebrations.
Newsonspot gathered that the tragic incident occurred in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area, in the early hours of Sunday. Gunmen reportedly stormed the worship centres, opened fire on congregants, and operated for an extended period without resistance.
The affected churches – First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church – were both targeted during the assault, leaving the community in panic and mourning.
A community leader and councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, confirmed the attack, stating that casualty figures were still being verified. According to him, conflicting reports suggest that between seven and eight people may have been killed.
Bawa explained that the attackers arrived in large numbers, surrounded the area, and began shooting sporadically at worshippers before abducting several victims into the bush. He also noted that poor telecommunications coverage in the area may have delayed emergency response efforts.
Residents revealed that the assailants operated for a prolonged period without intervention, raising concerns about the vulnerability of rural communities in the region.
The attack adds to growing insecurity in Kaduna State and northern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently target villages, religious centres, and civilians. It comes just two months after a similar incident in Kurmin Wali community, also in Kachia LGA, where several worshippers were abducted during a church gathering in February 2026.
Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of those abducted. The Kaduna State Police Command has yet to issue a detailed official statement, though further updates are anticipated.
Observers say the recurring attacks highlight the urgent need for improved security, especially in rural communities during religious gatherings and festive periods.
