Authorities in Enugu State have arrested a 30-year-old man, the parents of a 13-year-old girl, and several others involved in an unlawful child marriage in Amufie, Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA.
Newsonspot reports that the Enugu State Police Command, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Affairs, confirmed that all key participants have been taken into custody. Those arrested include the underage girl, the man she was married to, her parents, and a woman identified as Ezenwanyi, alleged to have played a major role in organising the marriage ceremony.
The Concerned Igbo-Eze North Youth (CINY), in a statement on Thursday, commended the swift response from the state government, the Ministry of Gender Affairs, and the Nigeria Police Force following widespread public outrage.
According to CINY, the arrests underscore the state’s firm stance on protecting children and enforcing laws against child marriage and abuse.
Authorities reiterated that Enugu State, like the rest of the South-East, strictly prohibits child marriage and remains committed to prosecuting offenders while intensifying efforts to curb violations against minors.
