Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled Grokipedia, a new crowdsourced online encyclopedia that he says will challenge Wikipedia’s dominance by delivering “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
Newsonspot reports that announcing the launch on social media, Musk confirmed that Grokipedia.com is now live. The site, which sports a minimalist design with only a search bar for navigation, reportedly already hosts over 885,000 articles. By comparison, Wikipedia boasts more than 7 million English articles.
Musk has long criticized Wikipedia, calling it biased and filled with “propaganda.” He has also urged people to stop donating to the nonprofit-run platform. In September, he revealed that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, was developing Grokipedia as part of its broader knowledge and AI ecosystem.
Although users can search topics ranging from pop culture to global history, questions remain about how Grokipedia’s articles are created. Reports suggest that the site is powered by xAI’s Grok chatbot, with some entries appearing to have been adapted directly from Wikipedia content.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, responded cautiously, saying it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.” The foundation also noted that Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven content has long been a major resource for training AI systems – including ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and possibly Grok itself.
“This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist,” the foundation said.
Grokipedia’s own entry on Wikipedia accuses the site of harboring “systemic ideological biases,” especially in political topics. Meanwhile, critics have pointed out that some Grokipedia entries are thinly sourced – for instance, its page on the Chola Dynasty includes only three references, compared to over 100 on Wikipedia’s version.
Wikipedia, for its part, maintains that its strength lies in transparency, rigorous editorial oversight, and an enduring culture of neutrality. “Wikipedia is written to inform billions of readers without promoting a particular point of view,” the foundation reiterated.
Whether Grokipedia will truly rival the world’s most popular encyclopedia remains to be seen – but Elon Musk’s entry into the information space has already sparked global debate on truth, bias, and the future of knowledge-sharing online.
