Popular Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund by his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.
Newsonspot reports that the announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, to his office.
According to Adewusi, Davido’s appointment is part of the state government’s renewed efforts to reposition sports in Osun through a sustainable public-private partnership model. The Sports Trust Fund, he explained, will serve as a platform to attract philanthropists and investors to support sports growth and infrastructure across the state.
“The introduction of the Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development,” Adewusi stated.
He further disclosed that plans are already in advanced stages to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body responsible for sports development, administration, and policy implementation.

Adewusi revealed that Davido accepted the appointment without hesitation, expressing his eagerness to contribute to the state’s sports development and youth empowerment. He added that Davido’s global influence and network would help attract funding, visibility, and opportunities for Osun’s sports sector.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, Adewusi assured that the renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium will be completed soon. The upgraded facility, he said, will meet Olympic standards and host both national and international sporting events.
However, the appointment has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, especially residents of Osun State, as Governor Adeleke continues to face criticism for appointing family members into prominent positions. It would be recalled that the governor previously appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of former Governor Isiaka Adeleke, as the Chairman of the Board of Local Government in 2023.
Despite the controversy, many view Davido’s inclusion in the sports development drive as a strategic move to leverage his influence and passion for youth empowerment to transform Osun’s sporting landscape.
