The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman of the Commission.
Newsonspot reports that Agbamuche, who is the oldest serving National Commissioner in INEC, assumes leadership following the completion of Professor Yakubu’s two-term tenure spanning ten years.
The handover took place on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
In his remarks, Professor Yakubu urged the commissioners and directors of the Commission to extend their full support to Agbamuche as she oversees the affairs of INEC pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015 – six months after Buhari assumed office – made history as the first person to serve two consecutive terms as INEC Chairman.
Under his leadership, INEC successfully conducted several elections, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections. His tenure is widely regarded as one of the most eventful periods in Nigeria’s electoral history.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to appoint Yakubu’s successor soon, subject to Senate confirmation.
