Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and human rights activist, was arraigned in handcuffs on Monday before Justice Babs Olaniyi Kuewumi at a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Newsonspot reports that he faces charges related to the alleged defamation of Chief Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), following claims of spreading false information in a published book.
Farotimi was previously arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court over the same allegations and is scheduled for another appearance there on Tuesday.
The Federal High Court granted him bail in the sum of N50 million with one surety, who must provide two years’ worth of tax clearance and a bank consent letter. The trial is adjourned to January 29, 2025.
The court premises were heavily guarded by armed policemen, and last week, the Inspector-General of Police filed a 12-count charge against Farotimi for alleged cybercrime.
