The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to be jointly hosted by three countries and the first to feature an expanded 48-team format.
Canada became the first co-host to exit the tournament after losing 3-0 to Morocco in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
Morocco secured a convincing victory with two goals from Azzedine Ounahi before Soufiane Rahimi added a late third. Canada’s campaign was also affected by injury problems involving star winger Alphonso Davies, whose fitness issues reduced the team’s attacking options.
Mexico’s World Cup journey ended a day later following a thrilling 3-2 defeat to England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Despite the backing of more than 80,000 home supporters, Mexico failed to advance. Jude Bellingham scored twice within 98 seconds in the first half, while Harry Kane added another goal from the penalty spot after England had been reduced to 10 players.
The defeat dashed Mexico’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986. Reports also suggest that head coach Javier Aguirre could be replaced by his assistant, Rafael Márquez.
The United States became the final host nation to bow out after Belgium produced an impressive 4-1 victory in Seattle.
The match attracted attention before kick-off following the reinstatement of US forward Folarin Balogun after his earlier suspension and comments made by US President Donald Trump ahead of the fixture.

With the co-hosts eliminated, the quarter-final lineup is now dominated by visiting nations. Teams still in contention include Morocco, France, Norway, Spain, Belgium, England and Argentina, while the remaining place will be decided between Egypt, Switzerland and Colombia.
