The Federal Government has unveiled a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), confirming that the scheme’s traditional khaki uniform will be replaced with locally produced Adire fabric as part of a comprehensive restructuring approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Newsonspot reports that the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande, announced the development on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He explained that the decision is aimed at promoting indigenous textile production, supporting local manufacturers, and ensuring that government spending contributes directly to Nigeria’s economy.
According to the minister, the new Adire uniform will be sourced from Nigerian textile producers in states such as Ogun and Kwara, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening local industries.
As part of the reforms, corps members will also be deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional expertise. Graduates trained as teachers, for instance, will primarily be posted to schools, while other graduates will be assigned to organisations that align with their respective fields of study.

The minister further disclosed that the government is considering posting corps members to locations where they are more familiar with the environment, especially in areas affected by security concerns. The measure is expected to improve the safety of participants and reduce the growing number of redeployment requests.
Olawande also dismissed reports suggesting that the military would be removed from the NYSC scheme. He clarified that while the reforms transfer the operational leadership of the scheme to civilian administration, the military will continue to provide orientation camp training and security support as it has traditionally done.
The reforms follow the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval of the first major restructuring of the NYSC in more than 50 years. Before the changes can take effect, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.
The government has not yet announced an official date for the introduction of the new Adire uniform.
