Nigerian-British aviator Ademilola Odujinrin has secured a place in aviation history as the first African to complete a solo flight around the world.
Newsonspot gathered that his remarkable nine-month journey, tagged “One Man, One Plane,” spanned five continents and over 15 countries, showcasing resilience, courage, and determination.
The historic expedition began in June 2016 and ended on March 29, 2017, at Washington Dulles International Airport – the same location where the journey started. With this feat, Odujinrin joined an elite group of fewer than 120 pilots worldwide who have successfully completed a solo circumnavigation by air.
Popularly known as “Lola,” Odujinrin was born in South London before moving to Nigeria at a young age. His passion for aviation showed early, as he earned his Private Pilot License at just 20 years old in only 19 days. He later trained professionally in both the UK and the United States, building a solid aviation career that included flying for Arik Air and working with Air Djibouti.
Since obtaining his commercial pilot license in 2011, he has logged over 4,000 flight hours and is certified to operate the Boeing 737. For his global journey, he piloted a specially configured Cirrus SR22, capable of flying for about four hours before refueling.
The journey was not without challenges. Odujinrin faced financial constraints during the expedition, at one point launching a crowdfunding campaign and making strategic stops to raise funds. Support from Bruce Dickinson proved crucial, especially in completing the final phase of the trip.
His route covered major global stops including Canada, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Malta, Egypt, Djibouti, Oman, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Australia. Notably, he did not land in Nigeria during the trip, reportedly due to a lack of corporate sponsorship.
Beyond breaking records, Odujinrin’s mission through Project Transcend is to inspire young Africans to dream big and pursue ambitious goals despite limitations. His story stands as a powerful reminder that determination and vision can push boundaries and redefine what is possible.
