UPDATE: Lagos Government Slams Korope Protest, Defends Restrictions on Lekki-Epe Expressway…

The Lagos State Government has condemned the protest staged by operators of mini-buses, popularly known as korope, which disrupted traffic along the Ajah axis of the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Newsonspot reports that according to authorities, some drivers parked their vehicles across major sections of Ajah Road on Tuesday, bringing movement to a halt and leaving thousands of commuters stranded for several hours. The government described the action as a violation of public order and a setback to ongoing transport reforms in the state.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, explained that the restriction on unregulated mini-bus operations on the Lekki-Epe corridor was neither sudden nor targeted. He noted that the expressway has officially been designated a Mass Transit and Regulated Transport Corridor under the state’s Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).

Giwa said the transition was deliberate and data-driven, aligning with the government’s long-term vision for a safer, more efficient, and reliable transport system. He added that transport unions, corridor operators, and relevant associations were consulted before enforcement began, with sensitisation and public advisories issued ahead of the policy implementation.

“The restriction of unregulated korope operations on that expressway is not arbitrary. Operators were adequately informed of the regulatory position and expected compliance,” he stated.

He described the blocking of the road by some drivers as unfortunate, stressing that such actions undermine public safety and economic productivity. The Lekki-Epe Expressway, he said, is a critical economic artery linking residential areas, commercial centres, industrial zones, and maritime assets, including the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

Giwa warned that allowing unregulated operations could reverse the gains already achieved in traffic flow, safety standards, and structured mass transit reforms on the corridor. He also commended the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for restoring order during the protest.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to regulated and orderly transport systems, noting that the Bus Reform Initiative aims to improve safety, predictability, and dignity in public transportation. While lawful engagement with operators remains open, the government warned that disruptions to public infrastructure will not be tolerated and urged drivers to comply with the regulatory framework.
